Abstract

A power-operated portable cassava sett-cutter was developed and tested for its performance in terms of cutting efficiency, percentage of damaged setts, and output capacity at different levels of stem diameter (15, 20, 25, 30, 35 mm) and moisture content (40, 50, 60%, w.b.). Comparing the maximum cutting efficiency, minimum percentage of damaged setts, and maximum output capacity in different combinations, the minimum loss occurred at a combination of 20 mm stem diameter and 50% (w.b.) moisture content. The cutting efficiency, percentage of damaged setts, and output capacity achieved with 20 mm stem diameter at 50% moisture content were 97%, 0.35%, and 9,600 sett.h-1, respectively. The savings in cost and time were 93.9% and 94.9%, respectively, as compared to manual sett cutting.
