Abstract

Various types of practices are used by farmers for storing onions. These include storage in gunny bags kept on floor or hanging from ceiling, in bamboo baskets or by spreading onions bulbs on floor tin single or double layer in heaps. The study reports the effects of ambient temperature and relative humidity on qualitative and quantitative losses of onion in these traditional methods of onion storage.. Among these methods, storage of onion in gunny bags hanging from ceiling dling recorded minimum losses (11.5%) during 120 d storage period. In storage of onion in hot humid condition, the losses could be reduced by aeration..
