DESIGN, PREFABRICATION AND TESTING OF A DROP STRUCTURE FOR SMALL FALL

The present work was undertaken with a view to design, prefabricate and evaluate the performance of the prefabricated hydraulic drop structure suitable for a fall of 30cm. A mould was made according to the designed dimensions. The prefabrication was done on a vibrating table using 1 : 1.5 : 3 cement, sand and coarse aggregates with welded wire net as reinforcements. All the corners were rounded and additional reinforcement was provided for extra strength. The energy dissipation, velocity distribution and erosion pattern in the down stream channel were measured. The structure was found to perform satisfactorily upto a maximum discharge of 451ps obtained during the study. Some localised problem of channel scour occured at discharges exceeding 20 Ips, but the study indicated that this could be taken care by lining a small leugth of the channel downstream to the structure.
