Abstract

This paper presents the standardization of the peeling unit of the abrasive brush type ginger peeling machine designed and developed by Agrawal et al. The peeling unit of this machine was redesigned with the different brush spacing of 1.30, 1.90 and 2.50 cm and brush wire heights of 1.25, 2.00 and 2.75 cm. Experiments were conducted to study the effect of various combinations of brush spacing and height and to recommend the optimum machine operational parameters. It was recommended that brush spacing of 1.90 and brush height of 2.00 cm and four or five number of passes with brush tip spacing of 1.0 cm at belt relative velocity of 199 cm/sec in downward direction are the best parameters to peel 2.0 cm think ginger. The average peeling efficiency and material loss at the abo e parameters were found to be 87.92 and 8.22 per cent respectively.
